Newbornapaloozasleep!
I feel like I’m continually in jet lag.
Here’s our schedule:
- Go to bed
- Wake up 1 hour later to pick up Elia
- Grace feeds her for 45 minutes or so
- Wake up to put down Elia
- Repeat every 2-3 hours as needed
With such short sleep, I’ve noticed that my dreams are extremely weird and vivid. For example, I was flying around my classroom this morning. In addition, I have no idea what day or time it is when I awake.
I’m not complaining–just sharing.
Round One: Mr. Reuben Falls!
We went to the pediatrician on Tuesday morning for Elia’s post-hospital visit. Because her bilirubin level was too high (21.4!), she had to be immediately admitted to the hospital for phototherapy (which means she is continually bathed in light to help her break down the bilirubin). She had two spotlights and one “billy blanket.”
At 3:30 am this morning, her level was 17; better but still too high. We expected to stay another night (we stayed overnight in order to feed her.) However, her afternoon blood test revealed that it had dropped to 14.5–still high, but allowable if she took a “billy blanket” home.
So now she is sleeping with this phototherapy system (which we rent for $175 a day!) under her back:

With that cord, she looks like a Wallaby; how fitting that the unit is called “The Wallaby 3″.
See the resemblance?:

How do you choose a major in college?
I cant stress this enough: Christians really do need to envision college differently. Its not enough to simply go through the motions, taking tests, getting grades and receiving degrees like everyone else. Through prayer and conversation with people who know you well, you must always remain open to Gods call and leading. Picking a major may be one of the first times that you truly put your faith in action.
Here are some questions to ask when deciding on a major:
Elia vs. Billy Reuben
Elia is fighting Mr. Reuben right now. Go Elia, go!
Actually, her bilirubin was too high today at her post-hospital checkup; she has jaundice. So she had to check back into the hospital and be under these lights for one or two days.
Go Elia, go!
Introducing Elia Zung-Ling Young
With thanksgiving to God, Grace and I are happy to announce the arrival of Elia Zung-Ling Young on Thursday, September 20, 2007 at 1:22 pm. She weighed 6 pounds 15 ounces and was 20 inches long.
Elia means “The Lord is my God”; It is pronounced with the emphasis on the first syllable: EL-ee-ah. “Zung-Ling” (spelled in Cantonese) means “Praising God and worshiping in the Spirit”.
Although still challenging, thankfully the labor was smoother than last time! Thank you for your prayers, and please join us in praising God for his grace and mercy!
[update: more photos here]
Labor has started!–and ended!
At the hospital now as Grace is in labor. Appreciate your prayers for a smooth delivery. Thank you for all your support!
Update: She was born at 1:22 pm. Will post name and details tomorrow! Again, thanks for all your support!
Two Year Old Blues
After he threw up in his bed, he was walking around and then fell into the door and got a nasty bruise and cut.
It’s not easy being two!

Praying from Scripture
“It is one thing to pray, “Lord, please be with us through this day.” It is quite another to pray, “Lord remember your promise, ‘I will never leave nor forsake you’ ”(Heb. 13:5). Can you sense the difference? It is one thing to pray, “As we begin our prayer, we thank you for the privilege of bringing our petitions to you.” It is quite another to pray, “We come at your invitation, O Christ, for you have promised, ‘Ask and you shall receive; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you.’ And so we come asking, seeking, and knocking” (Matt. 7:7-8). It is one thing to pray in the middle of tragedy, “Lord we know that you have a plan.” That is a true, valid, and comforting thing to pray. Even so, it is quite another to pray, “O Lord, you have numbered the hairs upon our heads. You are working all things after the counsel of your will. Not even a sparrow may fall from a tree apart from you. You cause all things to work together for good for those who love you, and are called according to your purpose” (Matt. 10:29-30; Eph. 1:11; Rom. 8:28). More effectively comfort the hearts of your people by echoing the promises of Scripture in your prayers.” (Terry Johnson and Ligon Duncan III, “Reading and Praying the Bible in Corporate Worship” in Give Praise to God, ed. by Phillip Ryken, Derek Thomas and Ligon Duncan III, p. 159)
Film: God Grew Tired of Us
God Grew Tired of Us is a film which documents the journey of three boys who fled the conflict of Sudan and, after 10 years, ended up in the United States. As you might expect it is an amazing and sobering story. To see their reaction to the United States is an insightful critique of so much of our culture. I recommend it.
