Sabbath Rest

Sabbath rest is tied to creation and redemption:

  • Creation: “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.  9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,  10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates.  11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.” (Exod 20:8-11)
  • Redemption: “Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the LORD your God has commanded you.  13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,  14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor the alien within your gates, so that your manservant and maidservant may rest, as you do.  15 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the LORD your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.” (Deut 5:12-15) [note: God gives rest contra Pharaoh who allowed no rest (see Exod 5)]

One thought on “Sabbath Rest

  1. “Jesus is my Sabbath”
I believe it is a wonderful thing to set aside one day of extra special praise and worship for the Lord Jesus. This gives us a chance to fellowship with other members of Gods family, and to be a closer knit part of the body of Christ. The Bible, however, does not make this out to be an issue of salvation in my studied opinion, as some denominations and or Churches would have us to believe. No, indeed if it were, then 90% of the prodestant church as a whole would be condemned; Would it not? The Sabbath day is the 7th day of the week anyway you count it. Sunday is the first day of the week. Not to worry though, GOD is so good, He has sent His Son to be our Sabbath. I can never get enough of reading the book in Hebrews that explains this fact so plainly and lovingly. Although there are coherent scriptures elsewhere in the New Testament that help to verify this belief, the writer of Hebrews has done a wonderful job of explaining it perfectly clear to me. God Bless you all..And Read Hebrews Chapter 4 again tonight.. You’ll be glad you did. Hebrews 4:4
For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.
    Hebrews 4:10
For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
